Top Seeds Upset on Day 2 of Baseball Tournament

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Day 2 of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament reshaped the bracket Wednesday at Hunter Wright Stadium, with No. 7 seed Reinhardt, No. 6 seed Bryan, No. 5 seed Pikeville, and No. 8 seed Montreat all posting wins. By the end of the day, Columbia International and Truett McConnell had been eliminated from the tournament, while top-seeded Milligan and No. 2 seed Johnson were pushed into losses.

Reinhardt opened the day with a 7-0 win over No. 9 seed Columbia International behind a dominant start from Ty Pangborn. Pangborn worked eight innings, allowed one hit and struck out 14 as Reinhardt finished with 10 hits and no errors. The Eagles broke through in the fourth inning when Cade Chamlee delivered a sacrifice fly, then Cannon Dorsey followed with a two-run homer to right for a 3-0 lead. Reinhardt added three more in the sixth on Jackson Rains' three-run homer to left, then tacked on another run in the seventh. Juan Pablo Morales collected three hits and scored twice, while Rains drove in three and Dorsey added two RBIs. CIU managed only one hit and three runners left on base in the loss.

The day's tightest game came next, when No. 6 seed Bryan edged No. 1 seed Milligan 2-1. Bryan scored once in the third, Milligan answered with its only run in the seventh, and Bryan pushed across the deciding run in the ninth. Ty Johnson threw a complete game for Bryan, covering all nine innings while allowing one run on seven hits. Milligan out-hit Bryan 7-5 and left only three runners on base, but could not generate the extra offense needed late. Caleb McCarty figured into Bryan's scoring, including the late run-producing hit that gave the Lions the margin they needed to advance.

Pikeville then pulled away from No. 10 seed Truett McConnell for a 14-7 victory in the afternoon game. Truett McConnell scored first on Donovan Parker's solo homer in the first and built early offense with runs in each of the first four innings, but Pikeville answered with four runs in the third to seize control. The Bears kept adding on with two in the fourth, three in the fifth, two in the seventh, and three more in the eighth, finishing with 14 runs on 14 hits. Riley Paulino led Pikeville with four hits and four RBIs, and Noah Brooks added three RBIs. Truett McConnell totaled 12 hits, including three from David Walters, but three errors and Pikeville's repeated big innings proved costly. The loss eliminated Truett McConnell from the tournament.

In the final game, No. 8 seed Montreat knocked off No. 2 seed Johnson 11-3. Montreat set the tone immediately with two runs in the first on Matthew Brunner's home run, then added one in the second and two more in the third to build a 5-1 cushion. Zachary Long supplied one of the game's defining swings with an inside-the-park homer in the third, then finished with three hits, four RBIs, and two home runs. Montreat broke the game open with four runs in the seventh, highlighted by Gustavo Gonzalez's home run, and added two more in the eighth, including a solo shot from Justin Austin. Johnson collected 10 hits but stranded nine runners, and Montreat's pitching staff limited the damage after Johnson scored once in the third and twice in the fifth.
